Compress MP4 and MOV videos shot on your iPhone or Android phone right in your browser. Vertical videos stay vertical, and multiple files are processed one after another.
Phone videos get big fast, even when they're only a few minutes long. Use this when a chat app says your video is too large to send, when it's over your email attachment limit, or when a forum or assignment submission site has a file size limit. It lowers the resolution and the amount of data per second (bitrate) and saves the video again as MP4, so it cuts the file size while keeping as much of the on-screen quality as possible.
Q. What settings should I use to send a video by chat app or email?
If you're not sure, 'Recommended' is enough. When there's a fixed size limit, as with email, 'Fit a target size' is easiest. Gmail, for example, lets you send up to 25 MB of attachments in total, so 25 MB is one of the preset buttons. Fitting a long video into a small size lowers the resolution, so if the quality isn't good enough, split the video and send it in parts.
Q. Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. Apchukso has no server that receives files. Your video is read and saved again inside the browser you're using, then downloaded straight to your device. Even if you turn off Wi-Fi after opening the page, it compresses just the same.
Q. Does it work with iPhone MOV files and vertical videos?
Yes. It accepts MOV, MP4, WEBM and M4V and saves them as MP4 (H.264), which opens almost anywhere, and vertical videos stay vertical. iPhone videos in the default HEVC (High Efficiency) format need a browser that can read HEVC, so if you get an error, try the latest Chrome or Edge on a computer. For future recordings, go to Settings > Camera > Formats on your iPhone and choose 'Most Compatible' to save them as H.264.
Q. How much smaller does it get, and how long does it take?
We tested it ourselves with a 52-second, 74.5 MB video shot in 1080p: 'High' gave 28.6 MB (-62%), 'Recommended' 14.7 MB (-80%) and 'Small' 6.2 MB (-92%). With 'Fit a target size', choosing 25 MB gave 19.3 MB and choosing 10 MB gave 7.9 MB, both within the target. 'Recommended' took about 6 seconds in Chrome on a PC; phones take longer depending on the device. If the target is too small for the video's length, you'll get the smallest file we could make, with a note that the target couldn't be reached.
