Skip the video,
keep the sound as MP3.

Extract the audio from MP4 and MOV videos and save it as MP3. Audio files like iPhone recordings (M4A) and WAV convert to MP3 too. Multiple files are processed one after another.

Your files never leave your device. Apchukso has no server that receives files. Everything is processed right here in this browser.
How to check for yourself
  1. With the page open, turn off Wi-Fi and run it. It still works.
  2. Press F12 → open the Network tab and run it. Apart from small analytics requests, there's no transfer anywhere near the size of your file.

How it works: The open-source Mediabunny (MPL-2.0) pulls the audio out of the file, your browser's built-in audio engine (WebCodecs, or Web Audio as a fallback) decodes it, and then the LAME MP3 encoder (LGPL) creates the MP3. The video is discarded and only the audio is saved. Your files are never sent anywhere.

More about converting MP4 to MP3

Use it when you want to take just the audio of a lecture, concert or interview video with you, when you need to upload an iPhone Voice Memo (M4A) somewhere that only accepts MP3, or when you're putting audio on a device that only plays MP3, like a car stereo or an old MP3 player. The video is discarded and only the audio is saved as MP3, so even a video of several hundred MB becomes an MP3 of just over 1 MB per minute.

How to use

  1. Drag and drop video or audio files, or click to choose them. If you pick several, they're converted one by one
  2. The default quality is 'High (192kbps)'. Choose 'Standard' for recordings and lectures, and 'High' or 'Best' for music. When you switch, 'Convert again' appears
  3. When it's done, check it with 'Preview' and press 'Download'. With two or more files, 'Download all as ZIP' gets them all at once

FAQ

Q. Can I extract just the audio from an MP4 video as MP3?

Yes. Add an MP4, MOV, WEBM or M4V video and it saves only the audio as MP3, leaving the video out. Whether the audio inside is AAC or Opus, it's converted to MP3.

Q. Does it work with iPhone Voice Memos (M4A) and other recordings?

Yes. It can convert M4A files from iPhone Voice Memos and the Galaxy voice recorder app, as well as WAV, AAC, FLAC and OGG files, to MP3. The AMR format once used for call recordings on older phones isn't supported because browsers can't read it.

Q. Which quality should I choose, and how big will the file be?

MP3 size depends on length and quality. Per minute, 128 kbps is about 0.9 MB, 192 kbps about 1.4 MB and 320 kbps about 2.3 MB. For recordings and lectures that are mostly speech, 128 kbps is plenty; for music, 192 kbps or higher is recommended. Choosing a higher quality than the original won't make it sound better than the original.

Q. Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Apchukso has no server that receives files. Your video and audio are read and converted to MP3 inside the browser you're using, then downloaded straight to your device. Even if you turn off Wi-Fi after opening the page, it converts just the same.

Q. Does it work with long videos? How long does it take?

Yes. Even with a long video, it decodes the audio a little at a time and writes the MP3 as it goes, so it doesn't use much memory. In Chrome on a PC, converting a 10-minute recording (9.5 MB) to a 192 kbps MP3 took about 17 seconds, and the result was about 14 MB. Phones take longer depending on the device. In browsers that don't support this method, such as older versions of Safari, the whole file is decoded at once, so very long files may stop partway.

Q. Can I convert YouTube videos to MP3?

No. Apchukso only converts files that are already on your device. It has no feature for downloading videos from sites like YouTube, and you should only use videos or music made by others within the scope the rights holder allows.
