Drop in HEIC photos and they become JPGs right away. Convert many at once, and portrait shots stay portrait. Your photos never leave this browser.
Photo info is removed. Converted files don't include photo info like location (GPS), device name, or date taken, because the photo is redrawn and saved as a new image.
Use it when iPhone photos copied to your computer won't open because they're .HEIC files, when a government, school, or shopping site only accepts JPG, or when someone can't open the photos you emailed them. HEIC photos taken on a Galaxy with "High efficiency pictures" turned on convert the same way.
Damaged files and animated HEIC (image sequences) may not convert. If one file contains several photos, only the main photo is converted, and you'll be notified.
There's another way for iPhone photos. According to Apple Support, when you share via AirDrop, Messages, or email and the receiving device doesn't support HEIC, photos may be automatically converted to a more compatible format such as JPEG, and they may also be converted to JPEG when you transfer them to a computer with a cable. For future photos, choose "Most Compatible" in Settings > Camera > Formats and they'll be saved as JPEG from the start.
According to Samsung's guide, Galaxy phones save photos in HEIF format when "High efficiency pictures" is turned on under Advanced picture options in the camera settings. If you'd rather shoot JPG, turn this option off.
Q. Why won't HEIC files open on my computer?
HEIC is the photo format (HEIF) iPhones use by default. It compresses better than JPEG, fitting the same quality into a smaller file, but many programs and websites still can't open it. Convert it to JPG and it will open in most programs and websites.
Q. Can my iPhone take photos in JPG from the start?
Yes. According to Apple Support, if you choose "Most Compatible" in Settings > Camera > Formats, new photos are saved as JPEG. HEIC photos you've already taken stay as they are, so convert those here.
Q. Does converting to JPG change the quality or file size?
The width and height stay the same as the original. Because HEIC compresses better than JPG, converting at the default 90% quality usually makes the file bigger than the original. In our test with a 12-megapixel photo taken on an iPhone 15 Pro (HEIC, 866KB), the JPG was 1.24MB at 90% quality and 768KB at 80%, and a lossless PNG was 11.23MB.
Q. Are my photos uploaded to a server? Is location data kept?
Your photos are never uploaded to a server. All conversion happens in the browser you're using right now. Converted files don't include photo info like location (GPS), device name, or date taken; the date and time are written into the JPG only when "Keep the date taken" is on.
