PPT too big to email?
Just shrink the photos.

When a PowerPoint file is heavy, it's usually the photos. This shrinks only the photos to the size they appear on the slides and leaves text, tables, and animations untouched. Word (DOCX) files are compressed the same way.

Your files never leave your device. Apchukso has no server that receives files. Everything is processed right here in this browser.
How to check for yourself
  1. With this page open, turn off Wi-Fi and run it. It still works.
  2. Press F12 → open the Network tab, then run it. Apart from small analytics requests, you won't see any transfer anywhere near the size of your file.

Beta Each compressed file is read back right away, and you only get it after the photo links and file structure check out. Still, for important files, keep the original and open the new file in PowerPoint once to make sure it's fine.

How it works: Photos inside the file are re-saved with this browser's Canvas (images with few colors are optimized as PNG with the open-source UPNG), and the file package is rebuilt from scratch. The XML holding text, tables, equations, charts, and animations isn't changed; only the compressed photos and the links pointing to them are updated. The finished file is read back to make sure no photo links are broken before you get it. Microsoft, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word are trademarks of Microsoft Corporation. More about reducing PowerPoint file size

Use it when a presentation is over the email attachment limit, when an assignment upload site has a size limit, or when you need to send it through a chat app. Phone photos are 3–5MB each, and even when you place them small on a slide, they're stored in the file at full size. Apchukso calculates how big each photo actually appears on its slide and shrinks it only to fit that size. No need to click [Compress Pictures] in PowerPoint photo by photo: the whole file is cleaned up at once.

How to use

  1. Drag in PPT files or click to choose them. If you pick several, they're compressed one at a time
  2. The default is "Recommended". Choose "Strong" if it'll only be viewed on screen, or "Light" if you'll print it. When you change it, "Compress again" appears
  3. When it's done, click "Download". You can also expand the list of compressed photos. With two or more files, you can get them all at once with "Download all as ZIP"

FAQ

Q. Why is my PowerPoint file so big?

Usually it's the photos. A single phone photo is 3–5MB, and even if you place it small on a slide, it's stored in the file at full size. If photos were pasted in as PNG, it's even bigger. Apchukso shrinks photos to the size they appear on the slide and converts photo-like PNGs to JPG.

Q. Will my text or animations change?

Slide content, fonts, tables, charts, and animations aren't touched. The only things that change are the photo files and, when a photo's format changes, the link pointing to it. Each photo's position, display size, and cropping stay the same.

Q. How much smaller does it get?

A 22.3MB PPTX with 6 phone photos and a large PNG image went down to 4.0MB (-82%), and a 15.0MB Word file with 4 photos went down to 0.27MB (Recommended level, about 2 seconds in Chrome on a PC). Files whose photos are already small, or that are large because of videos, shrink less.

Q. Does it work on PowerPoint files with videos?

Videos and audio are left as they are. If videos are what's making it big, try [File] > [Info] > [Compress Media] in PowerPoint.

Q. What about old formats (.ppt) or password-protected files?

Old formats like .ppt and .doc and password-protected files can't be compressed. In PowerPoint, use [Save As] to save it as PPTX, or remove the password and save, then add the file here.

Q. Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Apchukso has no server that receives files. Shrinking the photos and repacking the file all happens in the browser you're using right now. Even if you turn off Wi-Fi after opening the page, it compresses just the same.
